Additional learning

Students learn a wide range of subjects in the NSW curriculum. They build skills, think creatively and prepare for life beyond school.

Religion and ethics

At our school, students can take part in special religious education (SRE) classes, depending on what’s available. These classes are delivered by approved providers. Currently our students participate in SRE one Thursday per fortnight. The choices are Anglican, Catholic or Non-Scripture.

When enrolling your child, you’ll be able to choose an option from the approved providers offered at our school. Students not attending SRE are given supervised alternative meaningful activities.

You’re welcome to change your choice at any time. Just let us know in writing or come and see our friendly staff in the front office.

For more information, visit the department’s website or contact us.

High potential and gifted education

At our school, we give the right support to help advanced or talented learners grow and do their best.

We notice these students early. They may learn quickly or show strong skills in creativity, leadership, problem solving or sport. We help them stay challenged with lessons and activities that match their strengths. We are currently running multiple High Potential and Gifted (HPG) groups from Year 1 to Year 6. Additionally, students are extended within the classroom to support their education and challenge students in a wide variety of activities.

Assessment and Reporting

At Cambridge Gardens Public School, we utilise a standards-referenced approach to student assessments, employing the A-E Common Grade Scale to evaluate student achievement. This scale provides a clear summary of the quality of achievement associated with each grade, encompassing the depth of knowledge, understanding, and range of skills demonstrated by students.

Grades are assigned based on individual performance against stage-appropriate outcomes, determined through quality assessments that support learning experiences. Our feedback focuses on achieving standards rather than comparing students to their peers, ensuring that grades reflect the evidence gathered from assessments and observations.

In addition to grades, we provide comprehensive reporting to parents, which includes:

Formal reports on student performance are issued at the end of Term 2 and Term 4, aligned with the NSW Department Assessment and Reporting Policy. Parent/teacher/student learning conferences accompany written reports, with additional interviews available upon request throughout the year.

Common Grade Scale:

NAPLAN Online

NAPLAN online tests include a range of question formats and interactive features. Students answer questions by clicking, typing and dragging; some questions include audio or interactive tools; all questions can be reviewed and answered, flagged and returned to later. The assessments can run through a real-time internet connection or onscreen without an internet connection.

NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students are learning through their regular school curriculum.

Students sit assessments in writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. The questions assess content linked to the Australian Curriculum: English and Mathematics.

All government and non-government education authorities contribute to the development of NAPLAN test materials.

For more information, visit the National Assessment Program (NAP)  website.
